Trey Harmon preparing to help.

The Work Based Learning (WBL) program at Schley County High school allows students to develop employability skills that support success in careers and post-secondary education.  Students can connect classroom learning with worksites to create a better transition into the workforce.  Placements can be paid positions or internships.

Trey Harmon is in the WBL program this semester and is in an internship with the Sumter County Fire Department with their Firefighter Explorer program.  Trey is able to learn first-hand the duties and responsibilities of firefighters and first responders.  Recently, he helped with the funeral procession of the late sheriff Pete Smith and was on scene for a structure fire. Trey remarks:

“Work Based Learning has given me the opportunity to learn skills that I wouldn't have the opportunity to learn in a high school classroom.  I am fortunate enough to be able to overlap my involvement in the Firefighter Explorer Program with the SCHS Work Based Learning Program.  This gives me the opportunity to work side by side with some true hometown heroes.  I don't get paid like students who have a traditional job for their WBL experience, but I do get hands on learning that will help prepare me for future career paths.”

We are very proud of Trey and the experience he is gaining through this internship.
