Sherman’s March to the Sea

After the fall of Atlanta, General Sherman set out to destroy the will of the Confederacy by marching and destroying a path all the way to Savannah.  This “march to the sea” still resonates with many Southerners and has created a lasting legacy in the deep South.  Many look at the event as a model of how to break the fighting spirit of your opponent and win absolute victory, while others see it as a war on largely a civilian population.  Mrs. Calhoun’s United States History classes recently mapped Sherman’s march and discussed its controversial legacy.  Here are some pictures of students working extremely hard to complete their maps:

 Christopher Columbus on Instagram?

How do teachers relate the Age of Discovery to students today? By putting the explorers on Social Media of course.  Coach Skipper had his 4th block class pretend that social media was around during the Age of Discovery.  Each student had to create Instagram and Twitter posts explaining what each explorer had accomplished.  Here are some pictures from the “new age” explorers.

Seniors in the “Real World”

Coach Rooks’ Economics classes are working on their annual budget projects.  Students are asked to pick a realistic career and create a monthly budget based on their lives right out of college.  Students have to find a place to live, buy a car, pay for utilities, pay off student loans, save for retirement, buy groceries, and many other things.  The seniors really enjoy the assignment as they find out what it’s like in the “Real World”.
